I’m learning to code. My brother, Oliver, is teaching me. We decided to write a text game together.
For people who love writing stories, I think text games are one of the best ways to learn programming.
A glorious combination of coding and writing that will take you back to the days of Fighting Fantasy – where you get to choose your own adventure and have different story endings – and retro games like Zork.
Plus, it’s a really practical way of pinning what you learn to something tangible. Sometimes abstract courses just don’t cut it, even if they have practice sessions built in.
So, my draft title is: The cat rescue home.
The goal? Rescue your cat, trapped in your home, from a zombie attack.
It’s the most exciting piece of writing I’ve worked on since I pressed pause on my dinosaur books. The coding is great fun too.
Eventually, I’ll post the game here. For now, I’m going to talk a bit about the code and the story.
